Listen here.

Touch the tips of tender blooms
And sit spinning at silver looms
Spinning a story wondrous
Wondering the mysterious

Hands raised to sky
Eyes open wide
Hands raised to sky
Heart open wide

I am currently using Clinique's High Definition mascara, and my question to you guys is...how do I take this off without ripping off my eyelashes? Am I doing something wrong? It looks great on, but it doesn't want to come off! I have baby oil and Clinique's Take the Day Off make-up remover and I really have to scrub at my eyes take remove the mascara.

Ok, I admit, I'm the last person on earth to read Cat's cradle, but I'll definitely not be the last one to say that it blew my mind and one of the few books that I'm going to re-read again and again till I practically remember each Calypso the book has to offer.

Tiger got to hunt,
Bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder, "Why, why, why?"
Tiger got to sleep,
Bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understands.

I like my authors not only to be the masters of words, but also the masters of wit and sarcasm and Kurt Vonnegut seems to be winning the race with this one. The book is a satirical commentary on the futility of the arms race, the ambiguity of religion, why there is no such thing as sin when it comes to science and the things people do for love. The book is 200 pages long, a fast read but quite heavy on philosophy and in the author’s own word, nothing in the book is true.

John (or Jonah) is planning to write a book on the day the atomic bomb was dropped. During the course of research he comes in contact with the late Dr. Felix Hoenikker's (father of the atomic bomb) three children. While interviewing them he becomes privy to the information that at the time of his death Dr. Hoenikker was working on a synthetic chemical called "Ice-nine", an isolated crystal which can cause water to freeze at relatively high temperatures. After the scientist's death, the newly created, apocalyptic, ice-nine is divided equally between the three children, who use this powerful substance to their own petty means. Angela, the eldest gives her share to her trophy husband who works for the American government. Frank gives his share to "Papa" Monzano; dictator of a fictional banana republic called San Lorenzo and becomes his right-hand man. Newt, the youngest gives his share in the name of love to a midget Russian dancer/spy who passes it on to the Russian government.

But this is not the most memorable part of the book. What makes the book a true work of genius is the belief system practiced in secret by each and every person in San Lorenzo, called Bokononism. It’s a faith created by the elusive Bokonon, which has nihilistic teachings dipped in a whole lot of humour and poetry and which mixes ritualistic faith and common-sense. No wonder it is outlawed and anyone found practicing it is given the “hook”. Bokononism by far is the most amusing fictional religion I have ever come across.

While the narrative gets a bit drab in the middle, the climax with the earth literally freezing over makes up for any lack of intensity. The book resonates with me on so many levels and I've just started to scratch the surface here. I can’t wait to re-read and find other hidden meanings in Vonnegut’s dark humour. And I’m totally using the taunting action where I hold out my hand palms facing each other, spread my fingers apart and ask "See the cat? See the cradle?" when I want to emphasize my point of irony and dismay. Well at least for the next few days.

Some photos are best viewed large, especially the one with little bits of fluff pinched in my fingers. I was enchanted by the fact that I could actually see the fine ridges on my fingers.

Hope you enjoy viewing them :)

Can anyone recommend some good books on the Romanovs? I'm interested in both fiction and non-fiction. Some titles I've read that I've liked include:

1) Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert Massie
2) All of Robert Alexander's books--The Kitchen Boy, Rasputin's Daughter, the Romanov Bride
3) City of Shadows- Ariana Franklin
4) The Last Days of the Romanovs- Helen Rappaport
5) The Tsarina's Daughter- Carolly Erickson

To a lesser extent, I'm also interested in books on the Russian civil war. I look forward to hearing from you all!

Hello beautiful people!

The Situation:
I just found out today that my ex husband is suing to change the custody agreement for our 8 year old daughter, mostly out of a vindictive need to control me and my relationship with my fiancee. Anyway, I have to attend mediation on Tuesday the 23rd and then the actual court date some time after that.  He will probably be bringing his new girlfriend to the mediation and my insecurities are kicking in.  I'm panicking on what to wear, how to do my make up and hair, etc.  I want to feel beautiful and powerful and give him the power to mess with my emotions any more.

The Dilemma:
I want to go get a great outfit to wear to the mediation, and ideally that I could then wear into court with a few changes.  I was thinking something along the lines of a pencil skirt, with a beautiful but conservative blouse and beautiful but conservative shoes.  There's a ton of comments and posts dealing with that kind of clothing, but so often the clothes need to be ordered online and then tailored for the best fit.  My dilemma is that I need to be able to go and buy all pieces of said outfit this weekend.  So no online ordering or tailoring possible.

The Request:
I live in South Orange County, California and there are tons of skinny chichi places for great clothes, I dont know of any awesome places for plus sizes, other than Lane Bryant, Torrid, and Avenue.  Are there any other brick and mortar type chain stores I should try?  Does anyone know of any good independent shops in South Orange County?

I am also open to other suggestions about outfits other than the previously mentioned skirt and shirt.

I'm 5'8" and about 215 pounds (dunno for sure - I tossed the scale out a few years ago!).  I'm an 18/20 in most things top and bottom and have a bit of an hourglass curve to me.  I also have long curly hair that can be tamed into pretty corkscrews but I don't know if I should wear it up or down or half up...

This is me a year ago, I've lost a little because that dress doesnt fit right anymore and I now have bangs.

I calmly await the wisdom of the fatshonista tribe.
(okay "I await the wisdom of the tribe with an impending sense of panic and doom is probably more accurate")

Hi. My name's Amy. I live in australia and i'm eighteen years old. This is my bedroom. Basically, I like to display everything I own. I would really love a nice, simple theme to my bedroom but I don't think it's worth the effort because I have so much stuff and only a single bed. Ummm I think i'm going to get rid of the lame pictures on the walls and just use a couple of frames eventually maybe they'll probably go back up...

big pictures i guess )

p.s i swapped those two shelves (the books that were piled up on to the longer shelf)
